چکیده

The global spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in wild birds and poultry is considered a significant pandemic threat. Furthermore, human infections resulting from direct contact with infected birds/poultry pose a serious public health threat. From November 2003 to March 2007, a total of 3345 H5N1 outbreaks were reported worldwide. Spatial and temporal patterns can provide clues in understanding the dynamics of disease spread. However, little has been done to explore these patterns of H5N1 outbreaks during this period at the global scale. The objective of this research is to detect spatial, temporal and space-time clustering using geostatistical methods. Data from histological confirmed cases of H5N1were obtained from a Dutch web site and a Google earth data. Kernel estimation, G and F functions were used to test the first-order and the second-order spatial clustering respectively. An autocorrelation function and a periodogram were used to detect the temporal clustering. In addition, Knox’s test, space-time Kfunction and space-time scan statistics were used to explore the space-time clustering. The Monte Carlo simulation was used to test the significance of the clustering. Examination of spatial and temporal patterns indicates significant spatial clustering and seasonal cyclicity. The Monte Carlo test revealed strong evidence for space-time clustering of H5N1 cases and the location of significant space-time clusters were detected. The results are considered to be valuable for global H5N1 surveillance, prevention and possible future outbreaks controlling. * Corresponding author

Spatio-Temporal Data Comparisons for Global Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 Outbreaks

Highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N1 is a zoonotic disease and control of the disease is one of the highest priority in global health. Disease surveillance systems are valuable data sources for various researches and management projects, but the data quality has not been paid much attention in previous studies. Based on data from two commonly used databases (Office International des E...

Spatio-temporal dynamics of global H5N1 outbreaks match bird migration patterns.

The global spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in poultry, wild birds and humans, poses a significant pandemic threat and a serious public health risk. An efficient surveillance and disease control system relies on the understanding of the dispersion patterns and spreading mechanisms of the virus. A space-time cluster analysis of H5N1 outbreaks was used to identify spatio-temporal ...

Transmissibility of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, subtype H5N1 in domestic poultry: a spatio-temporal estimation at the global scale.

The highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV), subtype H5N1 poses a serious threat not only to the poultry industry and wild birds but also to humans. Despite a large number of studies conducted on various aspects of this virus, its transmissibility is still poorly understood. This study quantifies the basic reproductive number (R0) of the global HPAIV H5N1 spread within domestic poultry ...

Combining Spatial-Temporal and Phylogenetic Analysis Approaches for Improved Understanding on Global H5N1 Transmission

BACKGROUND Since late 2003, the highly pathogenic influenza A H5N1 had initiated several outbreak waves that swept across the Eurasia and Africa continents. Getting prepared for reassortment or mutation of H5N1 viruses has become a global priority. Although the spreading mechanism of H5N1 has been studied from different perspectives, its main transmission agents and spread route problems remain...

Spatial, temporal and genetic dynamics of highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) virus in China

BACKGROUND The spatial spread of H5N1 avian influenza, significant ongoing mutations, and long-term persistence of the virus in some geographic regions has had an enormous impact on the poultry industry and presents a serious threat to human health. METHODS We applied phylogenetic analysis, geospatial techniques, and time series models to investigate the spatiotemporal pattern of H5N1 outbrea...
